Farmer success in high-yield rice cultivation under IRRI supervision in hilly areas<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

There is diversity in the environment of rice production in Bangladesh. Bangladesh and the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI<\/a>) have been working together successfully for more than five decades. Sample harvesting of high-yield and disease-free rice varieties of the IRRI-Agro project in a short time under the supervision of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI<\/a>) has been conducted in Uttar Banogram village of Kaptai upazila of Rangamati district, Shukarchari village of Sadar upazila, and Sonai Baga Para village of Longadu upazila.<\/span><\/p>\n

Early in the day on Saturday (November 25, 2023), sample crop harvesting was completed on the land of local farmer Masudur Rahman in Uttar Banogram village of Kaptai upazila. The Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer of the concerned block of the upazila, Md. Omar Faizul Hasan, was present. After the threshing of rice from the demonstration plot, 6.1 tons of BRRI dhan103 rice per hectare, 6.3 tons of BRRI dhan87 rice per hectare, 6.2 tons of BRRI dhan72 rice per 72 hectares, 5.1 tons of BRRI dhan72 rice per 72 hectares, and 4.1 tons of BR11 rice per hectare were found.<\/span><\/p>\n

Local farmer Masudur Rahman himself is happy to grow these high-yielding rice varieties. He prefers BRRI dhan 103, BRRI<\/a> dhan 87, BRRI dhan 72, and BRRI dhan 52 and expressed hope to cultivate more land in the coming season.<\/span><\/p>\n

On the same day, at noon, sample crop harvesting was completed in Shukarchari village of Sadar Upazila in Nil Chandra Chakma land. Indra Mujib Chakma, a local farmer in Sadar Upazila, prefers the BRRI dhan 87, BRRI dhan 72, and BRRI dhan 52 rice varieties. Due to the good yield in the current season, Aman is encouraged to cultivate all these varieties of rice in the next season.<\/span><\/p>\n

On Sunday (November 26,2023) morning, sample crops were harvested on Kajla Chakma’s demonstration plot in Sonai Baga Para village of Longadu Upazila. Longadu Upazila is a mountainous, bordering upazila in Rangamati district. Farmer Kajla Chakma of this upazila expressed his satisfaction by cultivating all these improved varieties of rice. The cultivation of these rice varieties has received a great response among the local farmers.<\/span><\/p>\n

After the threshing of rice from the exhibition land, 5.6 tons of BRRI dhan103 rice per hectare, 6.1 tons of BRRI dhan87 rice per hectare, 5.7 tons of BRRI dhan72 rice per 72 hectares, 4.8 tons of BRRI dhan72 rice per 72 hectares, and 5.1 tons of BR11 rice per hectare were found.<\/span><\/p>\n

Five (5) heads of disease-free, modern high-yielding rice varieties experimentally adapted to the climate in cooperation with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University (BSMRAU<\/a>) and Agribusiness Education and Research International (AERI), funded by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), in the hilly regions of the Head-to-Head Adaptive Trial (HHAT) are demonstrated. The lifespan of these rice’s is 125 to 140 days.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under the financing and direction of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI<\/a>), Md. Rabiul Awal, the Sub Assistant Agricultural Officer of the relevant block of the upazila, was present in the sample crop cutting ceremony. The project officer of Agribusiness Education and Research International, Bagee Mong Marma, farmers of the demonstration plot, and a large number of farmers from different areas of the respective upazilas were also present.<\/span><\/p>\n

All those present at the sample crop cutting ceremony expressed their gratitude to the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI<\/a>) for making farmers interested in modern rice cultivation through demonstrations of high-yielding rice varieties at the farmer level in hilly areas.<\/span><\/p>\n
