Research information exchange across disciplines is highly sought-after. Effective interdisciplinary integration of research knowledge and cross-disciplinary dissemination of findings may be exemplified by publication in the top multidisciplinary journals. Researchers may publish with numerous partners in numerous fields, giving the impression that they are working across disciplines, but in reality, they may be serially monodisciplinary, adhering strictly to one body of literature for each publication. The development of a diversified portfolio of research projects is a common objective of funding initiatives. They seem successfully interdisciplinary when viewed as a portfolio, but when viewed as individual-financed projects, they may appear to be distinctly monodisciplinary.
The intentional selection of articles for multidisciplinary journals takes into account both the articles’ potential to affect and fascinate a variety of scientific communities as well as the manner in which they advance their respective fields’ respective literature.
